Two Billion At Risk – Threat of Limited Nuclear War

Erstellt am 30.10.2014 von Andreas Hermann Landl

Robert Dodge, Ira Helfand on August 9, 2014 have written the followig remarkable article:

>> As physicians we spend our professional lives applying scientific facts to the health and well being of our patients. When it comes to public health threats like TB, polio, cholera, AIDS and others where there is no cure, our aim is to prevent what we cannot cure. It is our professional, ethical and moral obligation to educate and speak out on these issues.
That said, the greatest imminent existential threat to human survival is potential of global nuclear war. We have long known that the consequences of large scale nuclear war could effectively end human existence on the planet. Yet there are more than 17,000 nuclear warheads in the world today with over 95% controlled by the U.S. and Russia. The international community is intent on preventing Iran from developing even a single nuclear weapon. And while appropriate to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, there is precious little effort being spent on the much larger and more critical problem of these arsenals.
Despite the Cold War mentality of the U.S. and Russia with their combined arsenals and a reliance on shear luck that a nuclear war is not started by accident, intent or cyber attack, we now know that the planet is threatened by a limited regional nuclear war which is a much more real possibility.

Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons

Erstellt am 21.08.2014 von Andreas Hermann Landl

Vienna Hofburg Palace, 8–9/12/2014

A world without nuclear weapons is a goal shared by all humanity. Yet, so far, it has remained elusive. An estimated 16.300 nuclear weapons still exist nearly 25 years after the end of the cold war. Today, nine states are believed to possess nuclear weapons, but as nuclear technology is becoming more available, more states, and even non-state actors, may strive to develop nuclear weapons in the future.

As long as nuclear weapons exist

Burma may turn into the next Rwanda

Erstellt am 02.07.2013 von Andreas Hermann Landl

Last week 50,000 people joined the Avaaz community from Burma. To find out their opinion on the Rohingya situation they were sent a poll and the results showed the huge amount of fear and misunderstanding:

83% believed the Rohingya should be denied citizenship.

67% believed the Rohingya should be forced to leave Burma.

Even with these discriminatory views, a large majority of the signers did not condone violence. However, the lack of tolerance expressed contributes to a climate that has allowed this violence to continue.

But this also gives us a tremendous opportunity to speak directly to tens of thousands of people in Burma. lesen sie mehr »
