THE REAL MEANING of MOTHERS‘ DAY
I’d like to tell you about a project I have been supporting since I returned home from Africa, I met the director of it at the World social Forum.
Here it is and I’d be happy to receive any comments. do send it on
& think about the art of nature & new trees in Palestine.
It is not about flowers and gifts for mother – it is about mothers
doing something to create a peaceful world. Women and peace groups
around the world are reviving the original Mother’s Day which started
after the USA Civil War, as a protest against the carnage of that war,
by women who had lost their sons and called on mothers and women to act
to prevent their sons from killing other mothers‘ children.
It was celebrated as a DAY for PEACE & Action by mothers in this
spirit for 70 years. Then the floral industry petitioned to have the
day declared a day when children and society honour mothers by buying
them flowers and other gifts. It was de-politicized and became a
sentimental, commercial holiday.
HERE IS HOW WE CAN HELP RESTORE THE ORIGINAL MOTHERS DAY and be active
for peace. Don’t buy flowers! Buy a living tree for $6 or 4 Euros!
Support this action for peace and justice.
THE ONE MILLION TREES PROJECT IN PALESTINE: The Arab Group for the
Protection of Nature. Amman, Jordan has initiated a goal of replanting
trees in Palestine.
Israel has uprooted & destroyed more than one million trees in
Palestine, half of them olive trees, the main commercial crop in
Palestine. The Arab Group for the Protection of Nature calls on us to
buy replacement trees; it will plant them & continue to raise
awareness about the occupation & destruction of Palestine. A DVD on
this project is available from the group
This is a special appeal for Mother’s Day: the trees can be designated
in the name of yourself, your mother or any mothers you choose to
honour in celebration of the real meaning of this day. (Trees can be
bought at other times as well.) For information on how to send your
tree order, contact: Victoria phone #1 250 595-7519 or you can send
your order as a CA$ cheque and designate names for trees to: BBCF, 1022
McGregor Ave. Victoria BC. V8S 3T9 Canada. You will be sent
confirmation. For those outside Canada contact: info@apnature.org or
